Why does aluminum welder weld with aluminum foil?

Aluminium fender is very thin, aluminium welding machine in order to keep the joint roughness, joint are usually very thin, almost can not weld, suggest put a piece of aluminum plate on the back of the fender, in the aluminum plate welding interface, so that the original a joint article becomes a 2 or 4 joint, fender won't cracked.
